Our History

In 1996, Jodi Andrews and Inger Arum had a vision: to build a clinical research organization (CRO) that could deliver personalized service and high quality data within an environment that achieves a work/life balance and eco-sensitivity. Both experienced clinical researchers, they knew the key to achieving their vision was to collaborate with other highly trained professionals. And so, from its inception, ProTrials Research, Inc. has offered a top-notch team of research specialists, with team members who collectively provide one of the industry’s highest average years of experience. Just as importantly, the ProTrials team collectively works toward mitigating their sponsors' risk of potentially losing millions of dollars by producing the best, reliable data on time and on budget.


From the start, ProTrials has kept a vigilant eye on its core values - excellence, collaboration, integrity, promise, community and balance. In the early years, as it worked hard to gain a reputation as a trusted partner for clinical research management, it landed a series of Phase III immunology studies. One was a high profile, international study for a groundbreaking HIV vaccine, and its successful completion solidified ProTrials' name as being synonymous with excellence.


Today, ProTrials offers a comprehensive suite of services and global support for Phase I-IV clinical trials to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device markets within a broad range of therapeutic areas, including oncology, cardiology, ophthalmology, infectious diseases and neurosciences. ProTrials has successfully completed over 350 studies to date, ranging from small investigational trials to large, multi-site studies involving thousands of patients. Its more than 85 employees average our employees average 10+ years of industry experience; the company's 90 percent employee retention rate, one of the highest for any CRO, gives sponsors the assurance that teams will remain in place for the duration of their studies.


ProTrials was certified as a green business in 2007, one of the first CROs to earn this distinction. In 2008, ProTrials attained certification by the Women's Business Enterprise National Council, an elite group of women-owned and operated businesses. Also that year, ProTrials was selected from more than 1,200 nomination submittals in 50 categories to be the 2008 Best Overall Company of the Year - Service Businesses - in the Stevie Awards for Women in Business international competition. ProTrials regularly appears on the Inc. 500/5000 list as one of the nation's fastest growing companies.

Strategically, ProTrials has forged strong alliances with technology vendors that enable the company to utilize the latest software, management platforms and electronic data capture systems for the delivery of real-time data.

Jodi Andrews

Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Jodi Andrews is one of the driving forces behind ProTrials, now recognized as a leading CRO in Silicon Valley and one of the fastest growing specialty CROs in North America. As a company founder, she leveraged her 20+ years of previous clinical research and project management experience at Syntex, Inc. and Otsuka America to help establish ProTrials’ reputation for excellence and to build it into a multi-million dollar organization. Today, she is responsible for daily operations at ProTrials, and utilizes her experience in domestic and international pharmaceutical and device clinical trials to provide the company’s strategic direction. Together with co-founder Inger Arum, she was named one of Silicon Valley’s most influential businesswomen and is an active member of many organizations including the Drug Information Association, The Alliance of CEOs, and The National Association of Women Business Owners. She is a graduate of California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo with a B.S. degree in animal science and business.

Inger Arum

Founder and President

Inger Arum was already well known in the pharmaceutical research industry for her work at Syntex, Inc. and Roche Pharmaceuticals before she co-founded ProTrials in 1996. Her 25+ years of experience with cardiovascular, infectious disease, gastroenterology, reproductive, anti-inflammatory, central nervous system, dermatology, and rheumatology products is invaluable today as she provides the vision, vigilance and guidance needed to build and maintain the excellent reputation of ProTrials’ project and senior management teams. Together with co-founder Jodi Andrews, she was named one of Silicon Valley’s most influential businesswomen. Also through her efforts, ProTrials was one of the first CROs in the country to adopt eco-sensitivity initiatives, resulting in its certification as a Green Business by California’s Mountain View and Santa Clara counties. An active member of a number of organizations, including the Drug Information Association, Association of Clinical Research Professionals and The National Association of Women Business Owners, Inger is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a B.S. degree in biology and physics.

Wendy Powers

Business Development Director

As one of ProTrials’ first employees, Wendy was actively involved in the company’s clinical operations before transitioning to the senior management team. On the clinical side, her more than 22 years of pharmaceutical and healthcare experience with organizations such as Syntex, Inc., Roche Pharmaceuticals, Aviron and CV Therapeutics, Inc. contributed to ProTrials’ reputation and expertise in areas such as international and domestic clinical trial management, clinical quality assurance compliance and successful NDA filings. Today, she heads several of ProTrials’ management initiatives such as the development and implementation of employee training programs, marketing and business development. She is a graduate of the University of California-Davis with a B.S. degree in nutrition science.

Janie Johnson

Director of Clinical Operations

Janie joined ProTrials in 1998, and leads clinical operations activities in the Western United States. Janie's responsibilities include the implementation of quality systems and tools throughout the company, line management, staff education, business development, and client relations. With 17 years of clinical research industry experience, Janie brings to ProTrials a strong clinical focus, and provides direction for growth of the organization, as well as for development of individual staff members. Prior to joining ProTrials, Janie worked for Syntex, Inc. and Clinimetrics (CRO), providing project management for global pharmaceutical and medical device trials while based in Italy, England and California. Her experience includes a broad range of therapeutic indications, and the successful implementation of clinical trials across multiple continents.


Jolyn O'Hare

Jolyn O'Hare

Director of Quality Assurance

Jolyn joined ProTrials in 1997, and is responsible for overseeing Quality Assurance policies and procedures, quality-related metrics, internal and external audits, GCP training, and clinical SOPs. She has been a member of the Core Management Team since its inception in 2002, and has been managing internal and external audits and CAPA responses since 2005. Jolyn has expanded the knowledge of federal and international regulations she gained from 11 years as a Clinical Research Associate and Project Manager, and updates clinical staff on regulatory and quality-related information on a regular basis.
